There is a tendency to underestimate the contribution of the agricultural sector to the development process. This is prompted especially by its low share in GDP creation. However, the spread of the paradigm of sustainable and balanced development, criticism of GDP as a measure of development processes, as well as the financial crisis – are prompting a reevaluation of views on the importance of agriculture and the desired directions of the evolution of this sector. Paradoxically, traditional agriculture, until recently considered non-modern, is now becoming “modern” and its products increasingly socially desirable.

The article assesses the new situation of the labor market of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship in two spatial dimensions – as a whole and according to the typological division of municipalities. The analysis was made on the basis of estimates of the actual number of jobs and the actual number of employed. The following aspects were examined: the size and structure of the Mazovian market, spatial accessibility of labor markets, spatial differentiation of wages, the role of new and creative enterprises in shaping the labor market, and the level of unemployment. As a result of the study, two features of the labor market in Mazovia stand out.

As part of the broad program of the 95th anniversary of the granting of city rights to Otwock (November 9, 1916), a popular science session was organized, entitled Passing Landscapes of Mazovia – Otwock 1916 – 2011. The organizers of the session were the Otwock branch of PTTK and the Otwock City Hall, and the event was held under the patronage of the Marshal of the Mazovian Voivodeship, Adam Struzik, the Mayor of Otwock, Zbigniew Szczepaniak, and the President of the Polish Tourist Society, Lech Drożdżyński. The conference was part of the cultural tradition and material history of an important part of the Mazovian area. It can be treated as a kind of presentation of the so-called “small homeland”, which at the same time shows the role it played in the past and will play in the future. Integration within the European Union will not only not deprive Mazovia of its national heritage, but on the contrary, it will contribute to its preservation.

Over the past decade or so, increasing importance in the development of cities, including in the shaping of their public spaces, has been attributed to the creative sector, which consists of activities based on individual creativity and talent. The activities of creative companies have a growing share in generating income for cities, and also account for their investment and settlement attractiveness. The development of the creative sector is associated with the presence of the so-called creative class, which in turn is a mobile class seeking attractive working and living conditions.
