The article presents selected issues from the paper entitled Metropolises and the competitiveness of regions, delivered (together with Associate Professor Tomasz Komornicki) on September 18, 2008 during the conference Metropolises – challenges for regional policy, organized by the Office of the Marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship in Warsaw. The main conceptual-theoretical and definitional issues related to the concepts used in the paper were discussed first. Reference was also made to the discussion of the delimitation and definition disputes taking place in Poland on the subject of metropolises and metropolization processes.

The metropolization of development processes is a new and difficult challenge for city governments and metropolitan areas. The development of metropolitan areas in Poland proceeds in a spontaneous and chaotic manner, resulting in functional-spatial conflicts and a lack of spatial order. There is a lack of legal regulations concerning the planning and management of the development of metropolitan areas.
