The importance of multiculturalism for the development of tourism, consistently emphasized in the literature, shows the long history and rich tradition of this form of tourism. Poland has historically been a land of transition between East and West, a land where different cultures have existed side by side: German, Jewish, Polish, and Russian. For centuries Poland was a meeting place of different religions and cultures and today’s landscape still shows evidence of this. The catastrophe of World War II brought the annihilation of a multicultural society and created a homogeneity, unprecedented in our history.

The Kurpie region is among the most interesting ethnographic regions of Poland, with the center of the original, well-preserved and carefully cultivated folk culture of the Kurpie [ethnographic group of the Polish population]. The image of the Kurpie village resulted from centuries of human activity. Over the centuries, transformations of the landscape occurred. Activities that gave the area a modern appearance were based on adaptation of the natural environment for cultivation of land and gradual establishment of human settlements.

KALOKAGATHOS. Kalos kai agathos – a Greek ideal combining truth, goodness and beauty, the unity of the virtues of mind, heart and body. The term was derived from two Greek adjectives: kalos – “beautiful” and agathos – “good”. The noun kalos has a broader meaning exceeding the modern concept of beauty. The Greeks applied it not only to things and objects, but also to human characters, professions, and even political systems. It was used to describe all things which appealed to the human senses and provided them with experiences of an ethical nature.

The smog phenomenon and its health consequences seem to be nowadays a real problem for many societies, including Poland. In addition, the question arises as to what impact it may have on urban planning and architectural design. Scientists believe that there are only three methods to avoid the dangerous smog pollution: trying to stay indoors during smog alerts, avoiding outdoor exercise and using special masks.
