The article includes the most important research results from the modular report under the same title, carried out in the project Socio-demographic determinants of Mazovia’s development (“Development trends of Mazovia”). It was shown that the Mazovian Voivodeship is a strongly socio-demographically differentiated area. This requires different spatial and regional policies, with reference to functional and settlement specifics and historical and cultural conditions.

Education, or more specifically, its “final product,” i.e. the level of education, is a very important factor influencing the level of socioeconomic development. The educational choices made, practically from the earliest stages of education, (either directly or indirectly – by parents) affect the success of the acquired education.

This paper summarizes some of the most important conclusions of the study of the settlement structure, linkages of subregional centers and socio-economic cohesion of Mazovia, carried out within the framework of the “Development Trends of Mazovia” project. In the context of polycentric development of Mazovia, the structure of settlement distribution is favorable. Central functions in the region are performed by Warsaw, around which five sub-regional centers are located (Radom, Płock, Ostrołęka, Ciechanów, Siedlce) with different development potential.

In this article, in addition to identifying the areas affected by intensive urbanization of space, an attempt has been made to identify the problems, benefits and threats, related to the formation of important natural structures for the OMW, and mainly the ecological network of the Warsaw Metropolitan Area, generated by the development of spontaneous urbanization. Within the OMW, the main threat to natural space is spontaneous urbanization. Since 2005, the northern part of the OMW has been distinguished by the particular intensity of urbanized land development, while in 2000-2004 it was mainly areas south of Warsaw.
