This paper summarizes some of the most important conclusions of the study of the settlement structure, linkages of subregional centers and socio-economic cohesion of Mazovia, carried out within the framework of the “Development Trends of Mazovia” project. In the context of polycentric development of Mazovia, the structure of settlement distribution is favorable. Central functions in the region are performed by Warsaw, around which five sub-regional centers are located (Radom, Płock, Ostrołęka, Ciechanów, Siedlce) with different development potential.

Education, or more specifically, its “final product,” i.e. the level of education, is a very important factor influencing the level of socioeconomic development. The educational choices made, practically from the earliest stages of education, (either directly or indirectly – by parents) affect the success of the acquired education.

The article includes the most important research results from the modular report under the same title, carried out in the project Socio-demographic determinants of Mazovia’s development (“Development trends of Mazovia”). It was shown that the Mazovian Voivodeship is a strongly socio-demographically differentiated area. This requires different spatial and regional policies, with reference to functional and settlement specifics and historical and cultural conditions.

October 20, 2011 marked 2 decades since the first issue of the Sierpc Variety [hereafter spelled as SR – author’s note] magazine was published. This is the first press title in the history of Sierpc that has managed to survive such a long period (with interruptions), which is no mean feat these days.

2012 marks the 550th anniversary of the incorporation of the first lands of the Duchy of Mazovia (Rawska and Gostynin lands) into Poland. This year’s anniversary prompts questions about the legacy of the Duchy of Mazovia. The Piasts of Mazovia, who ruled the Duchy of Mazovia, although today they seem a little underestimated, a little forgotten, a little treated as semi-legendary figures, laid the milestones for the development of today’s Mazovia.

The current Development Strategy for the Mazowieckie Voivodeship until 2020 was adopted on May 29, 2006 by Resolution of the Voivodeship Assembly No. 78/06. The document constitutes a coherent and comprehensive concept of the region’s development in the long-term perspective. However, despite the proper course of the strategic programming cycle, 5 years have passed since its adoption, during which the formal and legal conditions for conducting development policy in Poland and the socio-economic situation of the region have changed.

This short paper aims to give an account on China’s rapid urbanization and the dilemmas and controversies this brings along. First the peculiarities of Chinese urbanization are discussed, such as the strange definition of urban areas and, more importantly, the contradiction between the quick marketization of the economy and the slow change in the strict top-down regulation of urbanization.
