A growing interest in public health and development planning is well visible in Sweden, and therefore, also reflected in both regional and municipal plans. There are, however, only few concrete examples of such integration up to now in Sweden and other countries. The aim of this article is to describe how public health issues are addressed in planning in the Stockholm region. What kind of methods has been used and what experiences have been gained from integration of health related issues in the planning of the region.

Development problems of the Uusimaa region, called also Helsinki region, is the main topic of the article. The Usimaa region is the only one metropolitan area in Finland, and is inhabited by 1.4 million people. In the article social and economic characteristics of the region are presented together with description of features of this region including level of creative industry development and level of development of knowledge based economy, as well as high productivity of industry located in the region.

The paper discusses selected aspects of the impact of the Internet and information technologies on the development of Mazovian Region. We have selected four such aspects, typically not discussed in detail. These aspects are: the impact of social knowledge of information technologies on the use of such technologies and thus on socio-economic development; cultural impacts of the Internet use; the impact of the Internet on sports and tourism; the use of information technologies in systems of quality control and their impact on economic competitiveness.

The paper starts with the issue of estimating duality gaps – the differences in development measured in years between diverse districts (powiat in Polish) – in Mazovia, taking the number of computer laboratories per primary or secondary school as a basic index of the development of information society. This is based on a classical statistical approach of estimating the parameters of logistic curves. It turns out that these gaps amount up to 16-17 years – a very large differences in development even between neighboring districts.
