AI Policy

A policy on the use of generative artificial intelligence tools applicable in the publication process of the scientific periodical “MAZOVIA Regional Studies”

This policy was developed based on the Stance and Recommendations of the Association of University Publishers on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) Tools in Academic Writing.

  • The Editorial Office of the periodical “MAZOVIA Regional Studies” recognises that only human beings can be the authors of scientific works. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including chatbots such as ChatGPT, cannot be considered authors/co-authors or cited as authors because they do not meet the essential criteria ensuing from the definition of authorship, especially they cannot be held responsible for the reliability, integrity and originality of the work; they do not have capacity for legal action and cannot manage copyright; they are unable to determine the existence or absence of a conflict of interest.
  • Authors bear full responsibility for the content of the submitted article, including all sections created using AI tools, and are therefore liable for any violations of publishing ethics.
  • Authors who use AI tools when writing texts, collecting and analysing data and creating graphic elements of their work are required to disclose, in a fair and fully transparent manner, which AI tool was used, how and to what extent it was used, and how it influenced the work in question.
  • Any use of AI tools should be disclosed in the content of the publication. The Editorial Office requires the following information to be provided: the name of the tool used and its version/model, the scope of application (e.g. language editing, data analysis) together with the commands (prompts) used or a brief description of how it was used (e.g. type of query/commands).
  • The Editorial Office does not permit the use of images created by generative AI in articles, unless they are the subject of the work in question. The use of AI tools to prepare auxiliary illustrations or data visualisations is permitted, provided that: data sources are reliable and documented, graphics do not violate copyright or licences, and materials are marked as “generated using an AI tool” (if applicable).
  • All articles submitted to the Editorial Office are preliminarily verified by the plagiat.pl system detecting also the use of AI tools.
  • Additionally, each Author is required to send a statement to the Editorial Office regarding the use of AI tools in the article. A template for this statement is attached to this policy.
  • Rules governing the use of AI tools in the review process for articles submitted to the Editorial Office of the periodical “MAZOVIA Regional Studies”:
    • Reviewers bear full responsibility for the reliability, accuracy, and integrity of the review process. No part of the text may be processed by AI without an Author’s consent and without disclosure of this fact.
    • At every stage of the review process, the principles of transparency in the use of AI, confidentiality and responsibility for the content of articles are observed.
    • Articles and correspondence relating to publications are treated as confidential documents. Transferring them to AI tools without the Author’s consent is unacceptable.
    • Neither the Editorial Office nor Reviewers may use AI tools to evaluate articles or create the review. Evaluating scientific work requires critical thinking and in-depth analysis that exceed the capabilities of artificial intelligence and can only be performed by human being.
